The Fantastic Four: First Steps had a truly astonishing opening weekend! The film’s Cinemascore and box office pull shows that Marvel may finally be back on top.
It’s no secret that Marvel has been suffering lately. The franchise has struggled to truly hit its’ stride, with projects like Captain America: Brave New World getting clobbered by review sites like Cinemascore and Rotten Tomatoes, while critically beloved projects like Thunderbolts underperformed at the global and domestic box office. This left many to worry which of these two issues The Fantastic Four: First Steps would succumb to.
Shockingly, the answer was neither. Early reviews for The Fantastic Four: First Steps were incredibly positive. And now, with the project’s opening weekend officially in the rear view, the film’s Cinemascore has officially been revealed. Marvel’s latest project landed an A- score, being on the upper end of the franchise’s average, and tying the recently released Superman.
Fantastic Four’s Box Office Clobbering
It was certainly clobbering time for The Fantastic Four: First Steps at the box office- only it was the one doing the clobbering! Variety reports that the film had a surprisingly strong opening weekend, raking in $118m at the domestic box office, adding another $100m worldwide. This put the film just $2m below the opening of Superman, which was certainly no easy feat.
The critical and box office success of The Fantastic Four: First Steps ensures that Marvel will have a place in their slate for the First Family for a long time to come. While fans won’t know if the film will end up profitable until long after the opening weekend, the Cinemascore and general sentiment around the film does certainly bold well.
