Is Yelena going to switch teams? The latest Avengers: Doomsday rumor suggests Florence Pugh’s hero may not be as loyal as she seems to fans.
Despite there being very little publicly available information about Avengers: Doomsday, there is one preconception that fans have clung to regarding the upcoming film. Namely, that the project will revolve around four teams coming to blows and teaming up: The X-Men, led by James Marsden’s Cyclops, the Avengers, led by Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, The Fantastic Four, led by Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, and the New Avengers* led by Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova.
However, it seems as though that idea may not be as true as people hoped. At least, when it comes to the team’s composition. The latest rumor from insider DaneilRPK reveals that Florence Pugh won’t actually be leading the New Avengers* in Avengers: Doomsday. Rather, Yelena Belova join Sam Wilson’s team of original recipe Avengers for whatever their mission might be.
What Is Yelena’s Role In Avengers: Doomsday?
This could make sense in context. Even ignoring the rather likely idea that Yelena Belova was moved to the main team because of Florence Pugh being a bankable actress, there are reasons to split the characters up. If the rumor mill is to be believed, Captain America’s team will be coming to blows with a dark inversion of the Avengers during the events of Avengers: Doomsday. If so, it would make sense for Yelena to swap teams in order to keep an eye on the multiversal Natasha Romanoff.
In contrast, the Fantastic Four will likely be focusing on fighting the X-Men, if remarks from Alan Cumming are to be believed. Adding the New Avengers* to their roster would make the fight a bit more fair. And, if Florence Pugh’s Yelena isn’t there to keep a leash on Sentry, it’s likely that the character will fall to The Void and be more easily defeated by other reality warpers like the Scarlet Witch or God Doom.
