Did David Ayer completely misunderstand Batman? The director reveals the truth behind the recently viral scene from his Suicide Squad film.
With Suicide Squad now technically canon to the DC Universe, fans have gone back to revisit the canary in the coal mine when it came to the death of the DCEU. While most discussions on the film focus on Jared Leto’s Joker or silly line deliveries, one particular scene featuring Batman has captured the current wave of discussion.
The scene comes rather early in the film, revealing how Will Smith’s Deadshot ended up in Belle Reve. In it, Batman descends down into an alley in Gotham, going to arrest Floyd in front of his young daughter Zoe. Many consider this moment in Suicide Squad to be one of the most out-of-character moments for the Caped Crusader in cinematic history, as many see it as Batman inflicting similar trauma to a young child as he experienced as a kid.
David Ayer Speaks Out On Viral Batman Scene
Surprisingly, David Ayer actually took to social media to address this controversy. The director admitted that, while the scene didn’t come out exactly as he wanted (along with many other scenes in Suicide Squad), the controversy was baked into the moment. Specifically, the director cites that it’s possible Batman is re-inflicting his own trauma on others as many hurt people do.
“Wish you could see the scene as shot. There’s a lot going on. It’s rich and emotional. Perhaps by arresting her father, Batman believes he’s sparing her worse trauma. Or perhaps with his own traumatic past Batman is doing what many hurt people do: he’s leaving wreckage behind him without being aware.”
“Batman has always operated at the edge. Does he fight and arrest bad guys to protect his wounded inner child? Is he just reenacting the past from an unhealthy place? I love this kind of debate.”

This type of grey morality was a defining feature of the films made by David Ayer and Zack Snyder. It’s also why projects like Suicide Squad and Man of Steel are so controversial. While characters like Batman or Superman are certainly not without conflict, many viewed the conflicts that the films focused on to go against the core of these beloved characters.
