Brett James Dead - Grammy Winner Dies in Plane Crash at 57

Grammy-winning country music songwriter Brett James has died at the age of 57.

Brett passed away on Thursday (September 18) in a small-engine plane crash.

Fox 17 reports that three people were on board the aircraft, which crashed near Iotla Valley Elementary School in Franklin, North Carolina. None of the people on the plane survived the crash.

The FAA released the following statement, “A Cirrus SR22T crashed in a field in Franklin, North Carolina, around 3 p.m. local time on Thursday, Sept. 18. Three people were on board. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide further updates.”

Brett won a Grammy Award for co-writing Carrie Underwood‘s smash hit single “Jesus Take the Wheel.” He released his self-titled debut solo album in 1995 and also wrote the songs “When the Sun Goes Down” by Kenny Chesney and Uncle Kracker, “Blessed” by Martina McBride, and “Cowboy Casanova” by Carrie.

He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and was twice named ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year.
