By the end of this year, ALL qualifying candidates will begin being automatically registered with the Selective Service… that means the responsibility of young American men to register on their own is being taken away!
A newly-proposed Selective Service rule was submitted to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30 laying the groundwork for a stark change in the registration process. What was typically left up to young men to do themselves in several states, is now going to become an automatic certainty.

As many know, most American men between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register in the event the US Government should enact a draft. Now, we’ll use the word “choice” lightly here, because up until now, American men have had the choice to register… they either do, or they don’t and face a felony that could result in prison time, fines, denial of federal and state student loans, federal jobs, and more.
So not a great choice, but a choice nonetheless!
However, with this new rule, qualifying men will be enrolled whether they want to be or not. According to Congress reports, enrollment rates remain high with 81 percent in 2024, which was down from 84 percent in 2023, but the Selective Service said this new decision will offer a more “streamlined registration process and corresponding workforce realignment.”
Workforce realignment?? Hmm…
As of now, more than 40 states and territories already automatically enroll qualifying candidates, but this new law bridges the gap for the remaining areas. According to Military Times, the change will take effect by December of this year. This comes amid the United States’ developing war with Iran and raised international tensions under President Donald Trump‘s leadership.
