In 1986, the “American Girl” doll was first released, starting with three historical dolls: 19th century pioneer Kirsten Larson, early 1900s wealthy orphan Samantha Parkington and World War 2 patriot Molly McEntire. Each doll had her own series of books, many well-made non-plastic accessories and outfits, and eventually, many more characters released over the years (namely American Revolution original horsegirl Felicity Merriman, runaway slave Addy Walker, and early 1800s Mexican-American Josefina Montoya, to name a few.)
Now, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the doll line, American Girl has released a new line of “modernized” versions of the original 6 classic historical dolls and fans (namely millennials) are NOT happy for several reasons:- The dolls are only 14 inches instead of the usual 18 inches, so these clothes would not fit your old doll that you’ve kept for years.- Many are saying the dolls look like they’re “on Ozempic” and, and their outfits, faces and proportions are too “Bratz-ish”, something which American Girl always tried to go against.- Feel that “modernizing” dolls who are meant to be from another time period defeats the whole original message of teaching history.
In addition to this, these new dolls are not cheap (shocker) and retail for $90 each and are available for pre-order right now.
