Adult Swim has officially added a new animated comedy to its lineup, and the premise alone is enough to make you do a double take. Titled My Two Cars, the upcoming quarter-hour series comes from Dan Licata and Joe Pera, and it centers on a man dealing with what might be the most absurd first-world problem ever put on television.
My Two Cars follows Keith Asshole, an Ohio resident facing a daily crisis that would break most of us. He owns not one but two vehicles and has to decide which one to drive. Every single day.
The official description lays out the concept: “Imagine you are lucky enough to own both a PT Cruiser and a Mini-Cooper. Your day-to-day life would be insane! But also hard hard. Keith Asshole does not have to imagine this, and in each episode he has to make the difficult decision which one to drive.”
Yes, that’s the show, and its ridiculous.
Licata voices Keith, bringing his offbeat comedic sensibility to a character trapped in a hilariously mundane existential loop. If you’ve seen his work on Saturday Night Live, you know he can take a strange premise and push it into uncomfortable, laugh-out-loud territory.
Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen clearly understands the gravity of this automotive dilemma, saying:
“Few shows (and fewer show runners) are courageous enough to explore life’s biggest questions, but Dan and Joe are more than brave enough to confront head-on the perplexity of which car to drive today.”
Licata and Pera seem just as aware of how ridiculous and perfect the concept is. They said:
“It’s a simple premise with good characters and great cars. We appreciate Adult Swim allowing us to see such a dumb idea through into an entire season.”
For Pera, this marks a return to familiar territory. My Two Cars is his second series with the network following the beloved Joe Pera Talks With You, which ran for three seasons and built a loyal fanbase around its gentle, awkward charm.
Licata also has history with Adult Swim, having written for Joe Pera Talks With You and contributed to the animated comedy Teenage Euthanasia.
Animation duties are being handled by Green Street Pictures, the studio behind the Emmy and Annie Award nominated Adult Swim series Common Side Effects as well as the Emmy-nominated Scavengers Reign.
Adult Swim has always thrived on high-concept weirdness, and My Two Cars fits right into that legacy. It takes a microscopic problem and treats it like a Shakespearean tragedy, which feels exactly like the kind of comedy this network loves to champion.
