A Pre-Fall preview! I simply had to wait until August – before felt way too early. I’ve been in New York City for the past week shooting content and taking meetings and enjoying evening temperatures in the 60’s. It has been an absolute dream. I’m not quite ready for Fall, but I am absolutely ready for Pre-Fall! Today I am going to highlight so many of my favorite Pre-Fall finds and I’ll also publish my “rules” for Pre-Fall. Pre-Fall fashion serves as that transition time between typical summer and fall collections. Yes, it is about darker tones, layering, and heavier fabrics, but it is much more interesting than that. While there are never strict “rules”, below are five guidelines that I consider, so let’s get started.
THE MAGIC IS IN THE MIX
This is that in-between season, so mix it up! Pair a longer silhouette with shorter silhouette – think chic shorts or a satin skirt with a printed trench. Pair a heavier fabric with a lighter fabric – think a short sleeved cashmere sweater with embroidered lace pants. Pair a darker color with a lighter color – think muted and earthy tones back to a pop colors. Opposites attract!
LEAVE ROOM FOR AIR
We want to be covered up, but not completely covered up. Think cropped lightweight trucker jackets, cardigan style striped knits, felt mini skirts, and strappy mary jane shoe options. All of these pieces provide weight and substance without feeling overwhelming. After all once temps really start to dip it’s always possible to add a tight or knee high or layering piece for more warmth. The more the merrier!
WEIGH YOUR OPTIONS
It’s of course layering season, but the fabric of those layers matter! We haven’t necessarily arrived at wool or down quite yet, there are first pit stops at cotton, corduroy, suede, and more. And don’t be shy to experiment with silhouette either! A longer lightweight trench, a cropped, quilted bomber, or even an interesting exploded plaid shirt jacket. Or maybe it’s as simple as your go-to baseball hat transitioning to corduroy for the next few months. This is the season to wear those pieces that you may not be able to wear in spring and summer, so take full advantage.
CHECK YOURSELF
Great plaid and check pieces often signal the changing of seasons. Of course, you can have beautiful Indian madras prints, pastel plaids, and preppy ginghams for summer, but the best checks to me always seem to be more fall forward. Now is the time to let them shine! Think unexpected prints that pop, muted menswear inspired patterns, and earthy countryside plaids. Now, consider these pieces in interesting or untraditional shapes. A mixed print skirt. A cropped pant. Or even a braided fringe bag!
Pre-Fall is the perfect season to explore and experiment with your style! And remember, these are just a few of my go-to guidelines. Rules are meant to broken!
