After several weeks at the top of the charts, Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 has finally been dethroned by the return of a Prime Video favorite: Gen V. A spinoff of the massively popular superhero satire The Boys, Gen V’s second season premiered on the service on September 17, kicking off a new year at Godolkin University School of Crimefighting. But in case The Boys franchise’s dark comedy and graphic violence isn’t quite what you’re in the mood for, there’s still a lot more to watch on the streaming service. From emotional dramas to hilarious animated comedies, there’s something for everyone in the service’s catalog. Here’s a look at three great shows we think you should watch on Prime Video this week.

‘Expats’ (2024)

Created and directed by Lulu Wang, Expats is a drama miniseries adapted from Janice Y. K. Lee’s 2016 novel, The Expatriates. The series stars Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, and Ji-young Yoo as three American expatriate women living in Hong Kong, following the highs and lows of their personal lives in the wake of a terrible tragedy. The show also features Brian Tee, Tiana Gowen, Bodhi del Rosario, Ruby Ruiz, Amelyn Pardenilla, and Jack Huston in key roles.

Expats premiered on Prime Video in January 2024 to favorable reviews, though the series’ production caused some controversy in Hong Kong and flew largely under the radar with audiences. The show presents a tragic and emotionally charged story that’s carried by the performances of its cast, especially its leading trio. Despite not being a big audience hit, the series has been hailed as one of the best shows of 2024 by multiple critics, and it is a challenging and underrated melodrama that’s worth checking out.

‘Dead Ringers’ (2023)

Developed by Alice Birch, Dead Ringers is a thriller drama miniseries adapted from David Cronenberg’s eponymous 1988 film, which was in turn inspired by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland’s 1977 novel, Twins. The show stars Rachel Weisz as Beverly and Elliot Mantle, twin gynecologists who share everything — the same practice, the same apartment, and the same woman — but their mental health problems and dysfunctional dynamics threaten to destroy everything they’ve built for themselves. Besides Weisz, the series also stars Britne Oldford, Poppy Liu, Jennifer Ehle, Michael Chernus, and more in supporting roles.

Whether the series or the movie is better is a matter of personal opinion, but Alice Birch’s take on Dead Ringers is an undeniably gripping psychological thriller with great acting, writing, direction, and cinematography. The show premiered at the 2023 Cannes International Series Festival (Canneseries) to favorable reviews, with Weisz receiving special praise for her ambitious double performance. The series went on to earn several accolades, including a Satellite Award, a Peabody Award, a Golden Globe nomination, and a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy nomination.

Created by Vivienne “VivziePop” Medrano, Helluva Boss is an adult animated musical black comedy series that revolves around an assassination company based in Hell that takes jobs in the land of the living. The show follows the employees of the company, called Immediate Murder Professionals (IMP), as they embark on various misadventures while trying to complete their tasks. The series’ voice cast includes Brandon Rogers, Richard Horvitz, Vivian Nixon, Erica Lindbeck, Bryce Pinkham, Alex Brightman, and more.

Set in the same universe as Medrano’s Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss was originally available exclusively on Medrano’s YouTube channel, where it built quite a fan following. Praised by critics and fans for its animation, music, edgy humor, and LGBTQ+ representation, it’s an offbeat workplace horror-comedy with genuinely hilarious writing and well-crafted characters. A spin-off series, Helluva Shorts, was released in April 2024, and in April 2025, the series was picked up by Prime Video for its third and fourth seasons, with the service also dropping a fully uncensored re-release of Seasons 1 and 2 on September 10.
